Updated September 20, 2026. I run freeseotoolsbox.com, a site of free SEO tools, so I have a stake in this topic. None of the tools reviewed below are mine.
Search “best Claude SEO checking tools” and you land on a list of eight brand-monitoring dashboards, ranked by the company that sells number one. Useful list. Wrong question, for a lot of people.
The phrase hides two jobs. Job one: you want Claude to audit your website (titles, indexing, schema, thin pages). Job two: you want to know whether Claude mentions your brand when someone asks it a question. Nearly every roundup answers job two. The wording people type (checker, checking software, analysis tool) reads like job one to me, though a keyword list can’t prove that.
This guide covers both, tells you which you probably need, and shows where Claude’s SEO checks quietly go wrong. The roundups skip that last part.
How I sorted these. I run Claude against my own WordPress site through connectors (a WordPress connector and an Ahrefs connector), and the first-hand notes below come from that. Everything else comes from each vendor’s own documentation, read in September 2026, and is labelled vendor-stated. Vendor pages are the only source for most prices here, so check them before paying.
What are the best Claude SEO checking tools?
The best Claude SEO checking tools depend on the job. To audit your own site with Claude, use the free claude-seo plugin plus Search Console data. To see whether Claude mentions your brand, use an AI-visibility tracker such as LLMrefs, xSeek or AIclicks. Most sites need only the first.
| Your job | My pick | Skip it if |
|---|---|---|
| Audit your site with Claude, free | claude-seo plugin | you don’t use a terminal |
| Same audit, no terminal | Hawk Academy checker skills in a Claude Project | you need a full-site crawl |
| Ground Claude in real numbers | Search Console data, then Ahrefs if you already pay for it | your site isn’t verified in Search Console |
| Track Claude mentions on a small budget | A hand-kept prompt log, then Keyword.com or LLMrefs | you manage client brands |
| Track Claude mentions at agency scale | AIclicks or Rankability | you run one small site |
Which Claude SEO tools can audit your site?
Start with claude-seo, the open-source plugin. It is MIT-licensed and, per its README, runs 25 sub-skills and 18 agents across technical SEO, E-E-A-T, schema and AI-search checks. It needs Claude Code plus Python 3.10 or newer. That’s the catch. It’s a terminal tool, so if you’ve never opened one, skip to the next pick.
It’s honest about its limits, which I like. Without Google API credentials, Core Web Vitals are lab estimates and indexation is inferred rather than read from Google. It also flags the cost of its own upgrade: five agents moved to Opus in v2.3.1, so a full audit now costs more than it used to.
No terminal? Hawk Academy publishes nine free checker skills. They cover overall score, technical health, AI visibility, cannibalization and more, each a plain markdown file, and they run in Claude Code or in a claude.ai Project once you paste the file into the Project instructions. The limit is stated on their own page: a skill audits what you hand it, so a URL check reads one page and a site-wide verdict needs a crawl export or Search Console data. The people who wrote that page also made the skills. Read it as a manual, not a review.
The data layer matters more than the skill. A checker with no data is an opinion. The free source is Search Console, and xSeek’s guide calls a Search Console connector the first integration every team should add to Claude Code. Those connectors are third-party servers, so check who maintains yours before granting access.
On the paid side, Ahrefs offers an official MCP server, and xSeek lists the Lite plan at $129 a month (the oldest price in this article, so verify it). I run that connector. When mine lost authentication, every call errored until I reconnected it. A connector is a dependency you maintain.
For crawls, Screaming Frog’s command-line mode lets Claude read an export. The free version covers 500 URLs.
Which Claude SEO tracking tools are worth paying for?
Different job, different products. A tracker sends prompts to Claude on a schedule and records whether your brand or URL appears in the answer.
Two things first. Claude answers have no position one. What you get is a mention rate. And because generated answers vary between runs, one check proves almost nothing, so run each prompt several times.
Prices below are vendor-stated, from AIclicks’s own roundup dated August 24, 2026, where AIclicks ranks itself first.
- Keyword.com: from $24.50 a month for 50 credits. AIclicks itself calls its AI features an add-on with shallower diagnostics than the dedicated trackers. Cheapest way in if you already track rankings there.
- LLMrefs: a free plan (one keyword, limited models) and Pro at $79 a month. Multi-engine, less deep.
- xSeek: $99.99 a month for three engines, one site and ten prompts.
- AIclicks: from $59 a month, with GA4 integration that ties Claude referral traffic to real visits.
- Rankability: $199 a month at the Core tier, with white-label reporting. Built for agencies.
For a small site, I’d pay none of them yet. Write 20 questions your customer would ask Claude. Run each three times. Log mentions in a sheet, then count how many named you. If the number is zero, no dashboard fixes that. The gap is your content and your third-party mentions, not the measuring. If it’s above zero and you want a weekly view, start with Keyword.com or LLMrefs’ free plan.
Where do Claude SEO checks go wrong?
Five places. Test any checker against them before trusting a score.
It reads the page you gave it, not the page Google fetches
Duplicate meta descriptions on my blog posts came from my theme adding one on top of the SEO plugin’s. Ad scripts injected by an ad plugin never appear in the post content either. Both show up only in the rendered HTML. A checker that reads the editor or the database passes pages that are broken in the browser.
Clean on-page, slow server
Two of my pages came back healthy on titles, meta, canonicals, H1 and schema. Meanwhile one had a server response near six seconds and no page cache. No content checker mentioned it, because content checkers don’t time the server. After caching, that page dropped to about 1.1 seconds.
Copied content passes a checklist
Eight of my tool pages carried text copied from my Word Counter page. A checker that only tests for a title and an H1 would have waved them through. Only reading the copy caught it.
Stale rules
Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026. Google’s documentation says the markup can stay, but it’s no longer a search-appearance lever. Ask any checker whether to add FAQ schema for rich results. If it says yes, it’s running on old knowledge.
Numbers and opinions with no source
Any search volume, traffic estimate or “score” without a source is decoration, so ask where it came from. Then there’s the quieter problem: makers’ beliefs leak into their findings. AIclicks recommends adding an llms.txt file, while the claude-seo README says llms.txt isn’t currently a citation lever. Same question, opposite advice. When a checker tells you what to fix, find out who wrote its rules. Either way, llms.txt sits behind fixing indexing and content in my queue.
What would I run this week?
- Export 28 days of Search Console queries and pages, and give them to Claude.
- Run one first-pass audit: claude-seo if you use a terminal, Hawk’s Website Score in a Claude Project if you don’t. Do it on your three most-visited pages, not the whole site.
- Check every “critical” finding against the rendered HTML (view-source in your browser).
- Run the same URL through a second, independent checker. Our free SEO audit tool and meta tag analyzer are two options. If two tools agree, act. If they disagree, investigate before changing anything.
- Once a month, rerun your 20-prompt Claude log.
Quick Answers to Common Questions
Can Claude check my SEO for free?
Yes, if you mean the tools. claude-seo and Hawk’s skills are free files. You still need your own Claude account, and Hawk notes a paid plan helps with bigger checks because of usage limits.
Is there a free Claude rank tracker?
Not a true one, because Claude has no rank positions, only mention rates. LLMrefs lists a free plan limited to one keyword. Otherwise use a spreadsheet and the prompt log above.
Do I need Claude Code?
For claude-seo, yes. For Hawk’s checker skills, no. A claude.ai Project is enough.
How accurate is a Claude SEO check?
As accurate as the input. It reads what you give it well, invents what you don’t, and can’t see server speed or your live rankings. Verify every critical finding in rendered HTML and Search Console.
What’s the best Claude SEO tool?
For auditing, claude-seo with Search Console data. For tracking mentions, a prompt log first, then Keyword.com or LLMrefs.
Your next step
Pick one job this week. If it’s the audit, run steps 1-4 above on your three most-visited pages. If it’s mention tracking, build the 20-prompt sheet before you open a pricing page. Compare both against Search Console in a month.
